Product Description
The sea has always held immense significance, both social and economic, for the inhabitants of the Low Countries - the modern Netherlands and Belgium. Between the mid-sixteenth and late seventeenth centuries, artists from both Holland and Flanders sought to explore the sea in its various forms, endowing it with new-found legitimacy as subject matter. This splendidly illustrated book, the companion to the exhibition, The Golden Age of Dutch Seascapes, follows the rise of seascape painting from 1550 to 1700. Through masterworks by Dutch and Flemish artists, such as Simon de Vlieger, Henrick Minderhout, Caspar van Wittel, and the van de Veldes, the exhibition explores the major themes of maritime painting from atmospheric and allegorical to naval history and foreign conquest. The catalog examines the exhibition's themes through a series of essays written by eminent art historians and contains a short biography of each artist along with a full discussion of each painting. The Golden Age of Dutch Seascapes appears at PEM from June 13, 2009 through September 7, 2009. This exhibition was organized by the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, England, where it appeared under the title Turmoil and Tranquillity.
