Product Description
Our pin is based on a wood and painted eagle carved by John Haley Bellemy, circa 1900, in the American Decorative Arts collection of the Peabody Essex Museum. The American eagle is strongly represented in this stylized carving with imaginatively draped flags and shields. According to the law of 1782, the shield is borne on the breast of the American eagle without any support to denote that the United States of America should rely on its own virtue. The colors of the shield are those used in the American flag: white signifies purity and innocence; red denotes hardiness and valor; and blue signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice.
