| Product Description |
Kabuki is traditional Japanese theatre that has been practiced since the 15th-century. The individual kanji characters of the word "kabuki" mean sing, dance, and skill. The word "kabuki" has also been interpreted to mean "avant-garde"or "bizarre" theatre. Kabuki theatre is famous for its stylized drama, exaggerated gestures, and the elaborate make-up worn by its traditionally male performers.
Our ceramic sake sets featuring colorful kabuki players combine 18th-century Japanese art with timeless minimalist shapes—perfect for expanding a collection of tableware or as unique vessels for special occasion and display.
Much like the contemplative tea ceremony called chanoyu, drinking sake—a fermented rice beverage—can be a full sensory experience in Japanese culture. Vessels are chosen to complement and enhance certain types of sake, which come in as many varieties as wine does. A rough textured and thickly glazed cup might be used for a casual drink of warmed sake with friends. A smooth cup, like the one in our kabuki sake set, with artful decoration might be reserved to mark special occasions, with the bottle kept chilled. Also, a cup with very little angle is said to make sake taste sweeter, because of the way the drink spreads across the tongue when the cup is tilted.
Select from one of two kabuki sake sets: the red and gold-striped robed actor or the green and gold costumed player. Each set comes with one sake bottle and one sake cup.
