The Universal Rule Q-boats first gained momentum in 1907, the year Dorothy Q. and Little Rhody II were launched. Members of the Boston Yacht Club had gathered previously to discuss the young class, which, at that time, was small and inactive. Dorothy Q. and Little Rhody II were among these, and they immediately proved to be competitive racers.
